Overtaking - Why & When

The first question that you should ask yourself whenever you consider
overtaking is - whether it’s necessary. Overtaking a slow moving
vehicle that is genuinely slowing your progress is meaningful.
However, overtaking is pointless if it serves only to move up one
place in a line of traffic.  Do not let an instinctive desire to get
ahead encourage you to overtake, but rather its practical aspects.

The second question is when to overtake.  On ordinary roads,
overtaking means spending more time on the wrong side of the road,
which is an exceedingly dangerous place to be. Planning, thinking &
decisiveness are essential as you may have to accelerate, overtake &
pullback in without alarming others.

Do not tailgate the vehicle in front of you, maintain a safe distance
& wait for the right moment. Always check your mirrors & signal before
moving out, accelerate firmly but smoothly. Ensure that there is
plenty of space and time to complete & do not cut in sharply at the
end of the manoeuvre.
