Tip of The Day

Caring the turbo charger

Does your vehicle have a turbo charger? Do you switch off the engine
right away after a drive or idle it for a while before doing so?

The most common cause of turbo failure results from hot shut-down, ie;
not letting the charger cool down properly. The turbo charger spins
much faster than the engine itself. For example if the engine is at
5,000 plus RPM then the turbo will be doing 150,000 RPM. The inertia
will keep the charger spinning even after you switch off the engine.
The most common cause of turbo failure is oil cooking, which occurs
when the oil that lubricates the center cartridge heats up & forms
solidified deposits.

So, the ideal way is to idle the vehicle for a minute or more after a
hard drive then shut down the engine. This will keep the RPM levels in
control & helps the turbo. About a minute of idling isn’t going to
cost a lot of fuel, but will surely make the turbo charger last much
longer.
