Summer heat and the car battery

If the summer heat is wearing you down, then it’s likely taking its
toll on the car battery too. Contrary to popular belief, summer highs
rather than winter lows pose the greatest threat to battery life.

Excessive heat & overcharging are the two main reasons for shortened
battery life. Heat causes the fluid to evaporate, resulting in
internal structural damage to the battery. A malfunctioning component
in the charging system, usually the voltage regulator allows a high
charging rate which leads to a slow battery death.

Make sure that the charging rate is optimal.

If the battery needs to be topped off, check it periodically
especially during hot weather.

Always replace the battery with the one that’s rated as equal, or
higher than the one being used.Keep the battery clean, as dirt is a
conductor which can drain power. Further, as corrosion accumulates on
the terminals it becomes an insulator, inhibiting the current flow.
